GB Dakar Rider Paul Jay Call for support

After receiving confirmation from ASO of my acceptance to ride in “The Dakar” in January 2013 I excitedly rang up my major sponsor to let them know it was all on, it was actually happening! To hear in reply that they were sorry but they have had their marketing budget dramatically cut and they couldn’t unfortunately finance my Dakar ride this time round!

Massive blow, as I’d had arranged to have a bike built ready and waiting for me on the start line and a full support deal with a major Honda Rally team. I went this route as I believed it to be the most hassle free option available, leaving me to concentrate on training and work. Time for a re-think, and unfortunately you can’t help yourself slipping into those negative thoughts, “was it actually meant to be this time round?” I’d seriously been planning to ride in “The Dakar” for over 20 years, to fulfil a childhood dream, training specifically tailored to “The Dakar” for the last couple of years, riding in heat, altitude and long, long days. Can it all be called to an abrupt stop this easily? In the same month my Uncle Bud, “Alec Jay” who got me into off road riding and has support and mentored me in many way’s passed away from Cancer. Time for some major reflection and questioning “what’s it’s all about”? The answer is clear to me now: “don’t live life with regrets, it’s too short”!

With renewed focus and determination, I was straight on the phone to my local Honda dealer “Tippetts Motors” in Surbiton who have come up trump’s with a deal on a new Honda CFR450X and a spares support package. Now all I need is all the Rally equipment that will fit on the Honda CFR450X and I’m there one way or another!    I have about 6 weeks remaining now to build a Dakar Rally bike ready for pre-inspection in Le Havre France along with the all spares and personal belongings I need for 22nd November 2012. Once the bike has been inspected it gets loaded on to the boat with all the spares and with everyone else who’s competing in The Dakar,  to arrive in Peru for late December.

So, If anyone out there has a full rally kit for a Honda CRF450X or any rally navigation parts kicking around in the back of the shed, I’d be very grateful for a call on 07597 086914 or email on You can also get all my contact details and follow my progress on my blog web site . Plus, If there is anyone else who’s going out to the next Dakar and thinks they can help in some way in support before or during the event or has some spare cash hanging around to help out with the huge cost of competing in “The Dakar”, please feel free to get in contact J.
